Renewal of corrosion protection on a power plant chimney
Thanks to the close collaboration with the corrosion protection manufacturer, SIKA®-Germany and the request of the certified painting organisation, Reugels & Lenzen, we were even able to give a 40-metre-high power plant chimney a new full coat on a "property line".
The problem with this task was that no scaffolding could be put up on the property line and the extremely weak neighbouring subsurface.
In close collaboration with the Mönchengladbach company, Reugels & Lenzen GmbH, the necessary work stages were determined
The top of the chimney was completely removed of rust and paint and then given an under, middle and top coat.
The main part of the work was, however, applying a new corrosion protection to the less corroded surfaces of the chimney. To do this, the entire tower was de-greased with lye, whereby a wash primer was created and all other dirt particles removed.
Before the complete coat however, the cleaning substances, primarily the lye residues, had to be washed off.
To do this, the entire tower was cleaned with a steam blaster - 500 bar and 95°C.
All washing water was collected and disposed of.
Some rust plaque was then removed, individual areas prime coated, and middle and top coats completely applied.
This first stage was carried out with 5 height workers and a high pressure cleaner in 6 consecutive working days.
The second work phase was carried out over 5 days with 2 height workers and a painter on the ground.
As the ladder could not be worked on simultaneously in the first phase, it was subsequently totally cleared of paint residues and rust.
Three corrosion protection areas - prime, middle and top coat - gave the chimney a completely new, youthful outfit.
The extremely sunny and, above all, dry weather conditions during both work phases enabled the work to be carried out quickly, as well as effectively and faultlessly.
The time schedule was upheld almost exactly according to the guidelines.
